Passing Time is a video work created with the artist’s filmmaker son Nasseim Valamanesh, featuring the repeated action of the artist’s thumbs and forefingers slowly moving and touching to continuously form an infinity sign. Only the artist’s hands are visible, suspended in a black space and the video is presented within a custom-built black box so that the viewer encounters it by looking down into the box, as though into a well. This point of view creates a sense of intimacy, like looking down on one’s own hands, and also abstracts it by enabling the viewer to see the work from different angles. There is no discernible beginning or end to the video as it is on a loop, like the infinity symbol itself.
